Natashia’s Tips for Successful Presentations
Be clear and professional
Know your audience (how many, background knowledge, expectations).
Stick to the time allowed.
Speak clearly and loud, look at the audience.
Keep out of the way of your visual aids.
Be aware of what the audience is seeing: point on the projected image (not on your monitor).
Check the room beforehand, come prepared.
Suggestions for Preparing your Presentation
The Main Message
‣ What are the main goals in giving the presentation?
‣ Choose carefully the message that you want to deliver.
‣ Choose wisely what not to include: you wish your audience to be interested and to understand just one or two main ideas. The report will have more details.
‣ Select the manner in which you will explain difficult issues (be pedagogical).
‣ Be aware of the time limitations and on the audience’s reactions to your explanations.
Structure of talk
‣ Title, outline.
‣ Introduction, background and research question.
‣ Key assumptions made, models, techniques applied, approaches taken to solve the problem.
‣ Results and conclusions.
Use of Visual Aids
‣ Use visual aids (slides) to guide and motivate your talk.
‣ Good slides often contain very little, “dot points”, and indices, rather than full sentences.
‣ Use mathematics carefully, you may have to simplify notation to keep the audience’s attention.
‣ Use graphics to summarize data and to illustrate results.
‣ All your visual aids should be clearly readable by audience.
‣ You may use our beamer template.
Practice
‣ Practice your talk in your team.
‣ When doing a team presentation, carefully manage participation and integration of material.
